The PS3 boasts an array of headsets of varying levels of quality. Sometimes the price reflects the quality of the product where you can pay through the roof, but you’re almost guaranteed an excellent experience with them.

However, there are a few dark horses where this isn’t the case. You don’t always have to break the bank to acquire various chat features and a headset with a truly dynamic sound output.

I’m going to review my top 3 PS3 headsets before deciding on a winner at the end. These are strictly headsets to be used for gaming on your Playstation 3 and not for other purposes like watching TV or listening to music.

Let’s begin the search for the best gaming headset for PS3 starting with the Creative Sound Blaster.

Creative Sound Blaster Recon 3D Omega Wireless

What a long name that is for a headset! Thankfully, it’s only one of the very few minor drawbacks to this product.

[easyazon_link asin=”B005KAK2FI” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]The Sound Blaster[/easyazon_link] retails for around the $170 mark at the time of writing and is around the price range where you’d expect the headset to be real quality. It is.

But before I talk about how great these headphones are, I’ll just quickly comment on some of its negative points. Once you hear the positives, you’ll understand why I say they’re only “minor” negatives.

As a wireless headset, you’d expect a stand or a charging base but this isn’t so. Unfortunately, you’ll have to charge the headphones via USB to a powered-on device like a PC or a laptop. I’d suggest using an AC plug if you have one to charge it and there’s no wired option when the battery dies.

That’s all the negativity I could find for the Sound Blaster!

On to the positives, and I can’t stress enough how comfortable and overall enjoyable I find the Sound Blasters. You can tell by just looking at the design that it’s a comfortable headset.

There’s a lot of padding on the earphones and headband to make sure you can last long gaming sessions. The mic is easily adjustable and the design of the headset in all is sleek, professional and “futuristic” looking with a blue LED display. It really does look like a wonderful piece of equipment.

The sound is phenomenal and comes with a 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound solution that brings to life any game you’re playing. The sound quality is crystal clear and I’d say almost unrivaled. I’d highly recommend playing around with the software that comes with the headphones and use the on hand equalizer so you can fine-tune the sound to be just right.

If it’s something you want to rely on too, the sound clarity will give you a competitive edge in online gaming. The sound of footsteps and bullet shells dropping are enhanced to give you a better idea of where those sounds come from.

In all, the Creative Sound Blaster Recon 3D Omega Wireless headphones are absolutely brilliant, save for the long name and that it could do with a better charging solution. As I said though, they’re minor negatives that won’t stop you falling in love with this headset.

Pros:

  • Incredible audio and surround sound playback
  • Software to customize sound and settings
  • Cheaper than competitive headsets arguably offering more
  • Works while charging

Cons:

  • No wired option when the battery dies
  • No charging base or stand
  • Long name

Turtle Beach Call of Duty: Black Ops II Ear Force X Ray Wireless Headset

[easyazon_link asin=”B00886XQNQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]==> Click Here for Pictures, Pricing and Reviews on Amazon.com <==[/easyazon_link]

Another long named headset, and another high quality one at that. No list is complete without one of the Turtle Beach products. (To see all of the Turtle Beach headsets we’ve reviewed, click here).

Turtle Beach claims that it provides the definitive audio experience for gaming with this headset and I was eager to find out if their bold claim was true or not. After playing Call of Duty with these headphones on, I could see why they weren’t hesitant to boast of their prowess.

[easyazon_link asin=”B00886XQNQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]The Turtle Beach X Ray headset[/easyazon_link] looks great with a bold, black design finished with orange rings around the earcups. It’s a bulky headset but it’s designed for comfort so that you can play on your PS3 for long periods without complaining of fatigue.

One downside to the design which is a bit of stickler when it comes to the headset as a whole, is that the headphones are branded officially for Call of Duty Black Ops II. If you’re not a fan of the game or don’t like branded equipment then this will most likely put you off of buying the headset.

If you’re able to put that aside, then you’re getting an extremely good headset.

The quality of the materials make the headset really comfortable and the design is simple enough with only a few features. There is a volume scroll on the left headphone which gets a huge thumbs up from me, the boom mic is really sturdy and flexible and there’s even a feature called a “Blast Limiter”. Essentially, this means that if the game gets too loud, it will reduce the amplitude of gunfire and explosions.

Operating off of a 2.4/5 GHz dual frequency, the X-Rays don’t fall victim to interference from other equipment in the house like wifi and Bluetooth devices, and this has been a problem with a lot of other wireless headsets.

The main selling point for these headphones is that they’re designed purely for enhancing your gaming experience through sound. Turtle Beach are renowned for their sound quality and comfort, and the X-Rays don’t let up.

They come equipped with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and a thundering bass that makes you feel like you’re really in a battlefield. The sound is crisp as you’d expect from a Turtle Beach product with a bass boost option like in similar headphones from this brand.

Using the bass boost alongside the 50mm speaker drives gives you an immersive sound whatever the amplitude and really brings the game to life. If there’s an explosion nearby in the game, add the bass boost function on top of the already brilliant sound and it’ll feel like a grenade is going off in your own bedroom.

Overall, the Turtle Beach X-Rays are a very good headset. Their main flaws are the branding for the design and that they’re catered to war games but they’re an extremely comfortable pair of headphones. Along with the clear 3D Surround Sound and retailing at $120 at the time of writing, what you’re getting for your money is a real powerhouse.

Pros:

  • Extremely comfortable to wear
  • Immersive sound that’ll enhance your gaming
  • Bass Boost and Blast Limiter features
  • No interruptions with frequency

Cons:

  • Catered to one type of game
  • Branding may put you off
  • Long name

Astro A40

[easyazon_link asin=”B00COAHHLE” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]==> Click Here for Pictures, Pricing and Reviews on Amazon.com <==[/easyazon_link]

To complete my top 3, we’ll look at the Astro A40 which is one of the Godfathers of gaming headsets. For an audiophile, it really doesn’t get much better than this. You can read our dedicated review of the Astro A40 2013 Edition gaming headst here.

Starting with the design, the Astro A40s don’t scream out with any LED lights or the subtle use of bright colors. The headset itself is all black unless you want the earcup’s shells to have a white plastic casing.

Out of the 3, the A40s are the only wired headphones that have made it to the top of my list and I have somewhat of a preference to wired headphones than their wireless counterparts.

[easyazon_link asin=”B00COAHHLE” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]The Astro A40s[/easyazon_link] are also the only headphones of the 3 to use a cloth material and this is something you’d normally associate with cheaper headphones. However, when you put the headphones on and feel the flexible yet sturdy design softly hug your head, you’ll realize that this is nothing like a lower end pair of headphones.

The microphone is unique in that it’s detachable and can be mounted either side of the headphones thanks to some swappable (and customizable) magnetic plates.

What makes them such a good pair of headphones is the [easyazon_link asin=”B004L6C6BK” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]MixAmp Pro[/easyazon_link]. This allows you to switch on the 7.1 Surround Sound and toggle between gaming, core sound, media and sports categories to emphasize whatever it is you’re playing at the time. Along with this is a mixer for adjusting the levels of game and voice sounds so that if the game gets too loud, you’ll be able to hear your team mates over gunfire, explosions or engines roaring.

One of the downsides to all this is that there is a mess of cables lying around and it can be difficult to set up. You definitely have to be patient but at the end of it all, it really is worth it.

The overall sound is fantastic. The sound quality really is brilliant and I’ve found it extremely hard to fault it. The best way I could describe it is to imagine sitting in a movie theater and having the whole experience in your headphones. You’ll be totally immersed in whatever you’re playing.

With all of these features and the excellent sound, there are a lot of positives with the Astro A40s. It’s like Astro wanted to go all out on these headphones and at a price retailing currently at around $180, you’ll be paying a lot of money for this quality. It’s worth every penny.

Pros:

  • Comfortable with no fatigue complaints
  • MixAmp Pro brings you a wide variety of sound options
  • Quality design
  • Amazing sound

Cons:

  • A mass of wires
  • Difficult to set up

And The BEST Gaming Headset For PS3 Is…

So, that completes my top 3 headsets for the use of the Playstation 3 and it’s really hard to separate them. All have differing features and I feel that if they all calibrated together, they’d create an unrivaled product for years to come.

Turtle Beach are probably my favorite headphone brand but I think it comes up short here. That’s not a sleight on the X-Rays, but the other 2 are in a league of their own.

To come first place, it’s a really difficult choice. I’m going to judge it purely on sound and the headset that impressed me the most, despite its long name, is the Creative Sound Blaster 3D Recon Omega headset.

[easyazon_link asin=”B005KAK2FI” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]creative-soundblaster-3d-omega[/easyazon_link]

Although the Astro A40s were phenomenal sound-wise, I felt that the Sound Blasters gave me much more of a competitive edge when playing. For that reason, I’m going to dub them the best gaming headset for PS3.
