Audiophiles are known to spend outrageous sums of money for something that’s marginally better than the standard average equipment that’s good enough for most people. And that’s why the [easyazon_link asin=”B0011UB9CQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Beyerdynamic DT-990[/easyazon_link] is an anomaly. It puts other cans to shame, and that includes many of the more expensive models. And the best part is, it’s price is actually very reasonable – some may even consider it a bargain. I wish you will enjoy my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Review!
Specs and Features
The DT 990 is a wired headphone with an open-back over-the-ear design. The frequency response range is from 5 to 35,000 Hz, with the impedance at 250 ohm. The 6.35mm stereo jack plug is coiled and 3 meters long. It weighs 290 grams.
The steel headband is fully padded, and the earpads are soft velour. The earcups are adjustable for the perfect fit. The cups are made from rigid plastic, and the aluminum fork that connects the cup can be adjusted. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 is made in Germany (and it shows).
Pros and Cons
There are plenty of reasons why so many people love [easyazon_link asin=”B0011UB9CQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Beyerdynamic DT-990[/easyazon_link].
- For its price range, the sound is amazing. It offers almost perfect clarity and detail. You’ll hear the different instruments clearly. The bass is also superb, and it will provide a boom without the muddiness—even with the bass, the clarity and details are still there.
If you check out the other headphones in this price range, you’ll have to look far and wide to find something that compares to the sound quality offered by the Beyerdynamic. Use this for your Blu-ray movies, and you’ll be in cinematic heaven.
- The comfort level is also more than adequate, despite the fact that it doesn’t look all that comfy. The velour padding is unbelievably soft, so it feels like you’ve got fluffy pillows over your ears. At first, the clamping force may be a bit too much, but that adjusts to your head over time when you stretch them out a little.
- The build quality is of course excellent, since the Beyerdynamic makers seem to typify the best that German engineering has to offer. You’ll find a lot of reviews stating that their units are still working perfectly even after three years or so. The only thing you’ll need to replace is the padding. The build may be mostly plastic, but it is very tough plastic as only the Germans can make them.
If you do muck up something, the parts are easily replaced, so you don’t have to replace the whole unit.
So why would some folks pay five times as much as this costs, when it’s very good already? There are several reasons for this. The most important one is that the treble can be a bit harsh. Over a few hours this may be unnoticed or tolerable, but when you tend to spend 7 hours or so listening to music with this headphone then “fatigue” (not the physical kind) will set in.
Some people also don’t like the feel of the plastic. It’s a minor thing since the plastic is tough, but it doesn’t feel or look as high-quality as it ought to be.
For those who really appreciate subtle improvements and high quality sound, then the [easyazon_link asin=”B0011UB9CQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Beyerdynamic DT-990[/easyazon_link] is a great starter headphone. If you don’t have a thousand dollars, then this is probably the best you can get for your money. You’ll get substantial savings, since other cans out there are more expensive but provide inferior comfort, build, and sound.
