The Tritton AX720 has been around since 2009, and considering the fact that new products come out of the market nearly every day, this model is already very old. Yet for a variety of reasons the Tritton AX720 holds up well to the passage of time, and diehard gamers on a budget can still have an awesome gaming experience with it.

If you’re interested in this particular model, take a few minutes to read our Tritton AX720 review before deciding to buy it. Let’s start with a short video review:

Price

The Mad Catz AX 720 clocks in at between $150 and $200, depending on who you buy it from. The best deals are generally [easyazon_link asin=”B008KH7NZA” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]here at Amazon[/easyazon_link]. Overall, the 720 is an awesome value. Though the Tritton Warhead is arguably a better bang for the buck and the Tritton AX Pro is a bit higher end (though pricier), you still expect a certain quality from the product when you’re shelling out this much cash. The AX 720 definitely delivers.

The Design

Let’s start off this Mad Catz Tritton AX 720 review by taking a look at the design. The almost inexplicable popularity of the Beats by Dre headphone—which looked good but made true audiophiles wince at the sound—demonstrates that headsets also need to look cool. Looks are important because even gamers don’t like to look goofy.

The good news is that when it comes to design, the Mad Catz AX720 is impressive. It’s mostly white hard plastic on top, accented by the red-orange logo at the side of the rectangular headset enclosures. A black line bisects the headset along with a black strip with the Tritton name on top. A black soft finish on the underside completes the look.

All in all, it looks like a headset designed for an Imperial Stormtrooper. Some even think that it actually feels like a helmet. But while the white rigid plastic does feel durable, in some parts it may seem just a bit fragile. The headband’s connection to the ear cups isn’t all that rigid, so you may want to be a bit careful pulling it off your ear.

Finally, the white decoder box is a bit larger than its counterparts, but this isn’t really a big deal. In fact, it may even be advantageous since the size may help you avoid stepping on it accidentally. The decoder box doesn’t have an option for battery usage though, so obviously those who want portable headsets have to go elsewhere.

Comfort

Comfort is always an issue if you’re wearing speakers that sit on top of your head. And in this regard opinions are mixed. Some people have no problems with the weight, but you’ll also find a Tritton AX720 review or two complaining that it’s too heavy. In general though, adults should have no problem with the weight of the Tritton AX720, and parents may not mind it one bit that their kids have to take it off every hour or so for some relief. It gives them the opportunity to tell their kids to go do their homework!

But if you don’t mind the weight, then the comfort level that the Tritton AX720 provides is pretty good. There’s a little bit of padding under the headband, which can be replaced if you want. The ear cups have significantly more padding and it gives just enough pressure on the ears so you don’t feel like you’re being crushed. However, this same padding may cause your ears to sweat. The padding may be soft, but compared to the Turtle Beach headsets they’re not exactly what you’d call plush.

The adjusters are steady so you don’t have to worry about adjusting things again when you take them off or if your gaming style involves a lot of head movements. But the ear cups don’t swivel in and out so resting it on your shoulders may be a bit awkward for some. However, they do tilt up and down, so it can adjust to the contours of your ears and head. You can attach the detachable mic under the left ear cup. The mic is sufficiently flexible to get it into a comfy position, but it’s not quite as pliable as in other more expensive headsets.

There’s an inline controller that allows you to adjust the game and chat volume. It’s easy enough to use, although it’s a challenge to get the volume right especially when it’s dark. The controller has a very long cable, so those with larger rooms would have no problems.

The Setup

Setting up the Tritton AX720 is very easy, especially if you actually bother to read the manual and follow the directions provided. One thing though: despite the “Universal” tag, it’s not for Wii users. It will work for the PS4, as well as the PS3, Xbox 360, and PCs (including Macs).

Sound Quality

Now this is the reason why the Tritton AX720 stands out, even among current models. It can really give you that feeling of immersion, as if you’re actually there in that fantasy world you’re playing in.

The headphone offers excellent sound isolation and noise canceling, so you can leave the real world behind as soon as you put it on. The sounds of your game will be very sharp and clear across all ranges (although some people may wish for a little bit more oomph to the base). What’s more, it doesn’t tire you out all that much, which is great for extended gaming sessions.

It may only be a simulated 5.1 surround sound system (unless you get the 7.1 upgrade version of the AX720), but the sounds it produces actually seem more realistic than what other headsets can produce. In playing your games, you’ll have no difficulty in discerning the position of other players, and you’ll even be able to estimate just how near they are to you just by the sound you hear.

As for the mic, it gets the job done adequately enough. It may not have some features available on other headsets (like automatically increasing the mic volume), but you’ll be heard very clearly by your teammates. Just don’t put it to close to your mouth; it’s a bit sensitive, and it’ll pick up your breathing.

Conclusion

Several years ago, one Tritton AX720 review boldly said that anyone who buys this headset won’t need another gaming headset “for a while”. Well, it’s been more than four years, yet that claim seems to hold true even now.

The Mad Catz AX720 by Tritton is even more affordable now than ever, and it will give you the sound quality you’ll require to immerse yourself totally in your virtual world. What’s more, the Tritton AX720 has proven its durability and quality beyond doubt. For an entry level headset that’s a few years old, it’s not bad at all.
