Buying a gaming headset can get really frustrating because there are simply so many options to choose from. Even if you just limit your choices to just the PC gaming headsets, the range of options is still a problem. Many people choose Turtle Beach because it’s a well-known brand, and for those looking for PC-compatible headsets, there’s always the [easyazon_link asin=”B00D6JBZBK” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Turtle Beach Ear Force Z22[/easyazon_link] Amplified PC Gaming Headset. I hope you enjoy my Turtle Beach Z22 review!
At the very least you’ll know that it’s a good headset. After all, it’s the official headset of Major League Gaming. But how good is it, really?
Features of the Turtle Beach Ear Force Z22 Amplified PC Gaming Headset
This is a gaming headset for the PC (or Mac). But it is compatible with the Xbox 360 consoles, although you’d need to configure it first. You’ll need an Xbox 360 Talkback Cable for LIVE Chat, and then you also have to buy a 3.5 mm Female to RCA Splitter Cable and an Xbox 360 Audio Adapter for game audio.
But out of the box, you will get the following:
- Adjustable base and treble boost
- Separate volume controls for game and chat volume
- Dynamic Chat Boost, which boosts the volume of the chat when the game is filled with loud explosions and gunfire
- Variable mic monitor, which allows you to hear and adjust the volume of your own voice
- Phone or music input so that you can connect your phone to take an important call or a music player for your background music
- USB powered, so that you never have to worry about batteries or using an AC adapter
- Large ear cups and breathable mesh cushions for added comfort
Using the Ear Force Z22
Admittedly, the [easyazon_link asin=”B00D6JBZBK” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Ear Force Z22[/easyazon_link] is a great headset. Setting it up is a piece of cake, as long as you follow the instructions. Before you even buy it, download the instructions online and see if you understand all the steps. You just have to plug it into the inline amp, plug it to a free USB port, and connect the 3.5 mm connector which is on the same cable as the USB connection.
Then you’ll need to configure it through Windows, and choose your sound card in the playback devices. On the Recording tab, set the Ear Force Z22as default. And that’s it.
The sound is quite nice, and it matches the quality of newer Turtle Beach headsets. The bass is especially clear and deep, which is not always the case with the more affordable headsets.
Your voice also carries over well. This makes it perfect for Skype, as many users have admitted. You will hear yourself over the speakers so when you’re playing you know when you are screaming. As for using it for your phone, the voice quality is just about the same as when you use your own phone.
Now let’s talk about comfort. Unless you have a very big head, this should fit you quite nicely. The breathable mesh design allows your ears to breath, so that’s good for long gaming sessions. It’s also very light on your head, and that’s a plus as well.
Finally, the build quality does feel a bit on the cheap side, but it’s not actually flimsy. Just don’t be cavalier about your treatment of it, and you’ll be fine.
On Amazon, about 71% of the 138 reviewers gave it a 5- or 4-star rating, and only 12.5% gave it a one-star rating. And even then, some of the negative reviews were a bit off. Calling it “the worst sound ever” is an obvious exaggeration, while others complained about finding out unexpected information after buying it when that information is freely available on the Turtle Beach website.
Perhaps the most common complaint about the [easyazon_link asin=”B00D6JBZBK” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”vicdor-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Turtle Beach Ear Force Z22[/easyazon_link] Amplified PC Gaming Headset is that some people were unable to get it to work with Windows 8.1 (although others said that they were able to do so just by following the box instructions). If you’re using Windows 8.1 too, make sure you know what to do before you buy it.
For everyone else, it’s a good buy. It’s very affordable, yet the sound is better than you expect. It’s rather light and comfy for most people, but if you really want to be sure then you need to try it out first before buying. That’s one advice that applies to any headset, or even anything you have to wear for that matter.
In any case, this headset is worth your money. The sound is great, the comfort level is quite nice, and the build quality is ok as long as you don’t abuse it. It ought to give you an enjoyable gaming experience without any sort of hassle at all.
